As a dental office, you might find us quite obsessed with your smile. To be honest, that's our job! We often talk about eating healthier and flossing, but one thing that all too often gets neglected is the other part of your smile, your lips. It's common knowledge that the hot summer sun can be dangerous, and everyone knows to wear sunscreen on their body. Lips, however, are often left out. There are several ways you can protect your lips from the sun's rays.
Did you know that applying an SPF protectant of 15 can allow you to stay in the sun for as long as 150 minutes without burning? Choosing a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher can help reduce your chances of getting sunburned. Reapply it after swimming, and about every two hours to get the best results. Use it even in the winter; the winter sun can be just as brutal.
An ointment is petroleum based. It is nourishing and can heal damaged skin. Cracks and peeling skin will no longer be an issue if you choose a good lip balm. A dab of olive oil on your lips at bedtime can help as well.
Drink water! Staying hydrated is the number one way to stay healthy. It's not just good for your teeth, gums, and digestion, it improves elasticity too. Lips move a lot when we talk, smile, yawn, or even when we brush our teeth, and all that moving can lead to loss of elasticity. Loss of elasticity causes wrinkles, and most people don't relish the idea of those.
While our main focus is your smile, it's important to keep your whole self healthy. Wear sunscreen on the rest of your body too! Wear a hat to protect your face, and don't forget your family. Even if they protest, remind them how important it is to stay healthy.
